According to Spanish TV show El Chiringuito de Jugones, Mourinho is keen on the Croatian, who he took to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012.

The Blues boss rates Modric highly and has been impressed with the form that he has shown this term and hopes to be able to add him to his squad next season.

However, Modric has become an integral part of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, making 29 appearances in La Liga so far, and Mourinho’s frosty relationship with the Madrid hierarchy may scupper any chance of the Croatian heading back to the Premier League.

The 28-year-old has also cut a happy figure in Spain and recently admitted a desire to end his career at Real Madrid.

Modric said in February: “I want to stay here for as many years as possible and, if it’s possible, finish my career here.

“I really enjoy my life in Spain. Madrid is a big and beautiful city with great parks where I like to walk.”
