The Croatian international is likely to lose his place as the club’s first choice striker next season with the imminent arrival of Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski and the Gunners have been widely tipped to make a move to rescue him from the bench.

However, Bayern’s sporting director Matthias Sammer has moved to dash Wenger’s hopes of bringing the 27-year-old on board by insisting that the player is still a big part of Pep Guardiola’s plans and any bid will fall on deaf ears.

“Nobody even has to bother making an approach for Mandzukic,” Sammer told Sky90.

“He is incredibly important to Bayern. I always affectionately say that he plays like an animal.

“It is simply amazing how much work he does for the team and how much running he does during a game.

“They always try to provoke him because he really hurts his opponents with his work-rate.”

So far this season Mandzukic has bagged 24 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions for the defending European and Bundesliga champions, and those goals have marched the club onto another league title and a place in the Champions League semi finals.
