Blues are due to meet Atleti officials this week to thrash out the terms of the deal.

The West London club have made the purchase of the prolific Brazil-born attacker their number one priority for when the summer transfer window finally reopens again for business at the start of July after missing out on first-choice target Wayne Rooney when the England international opted to put pen to paper on a new deal at Old Trafford earlier this year.

However, the Blues are said to be increasingly confident of being able to sign the Spain international, with boss Jose Mourinho happy to pay the player’s £32m release clause in his current deal at the Vicente Calderon, while the west Londoners are also understood to be preparing a bumper five-year contract for Costa worth a staggering £165,000 per week, the same amount that their current top earner Eden Hazard is on at the Bridge.

All of which works out at a cost of £48m in wages over five years, which takes the total value of the deal to £80m.
