With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both set to leave Old Trafford when their respective contracts expire in the summer Moyes is certainly in need of fresh alternatives at the back, not least as both Phil Jones and Chris Smalling appear better suited in defensive midfield and right-back roles respectively.

A move for 25 year old Danish international Kjaer is perhaps something of a surprise though.

The strong tackling defender moved to Ligue 1 side Lille last summer after failing to impress during a loan spell at Roma last term.

Lille have conceded just 20 goals in 33 domestic league fixtures this term and this is down in no small part to Kjaer’s displays and the Stade Pierre-Mauroy side would no doubt demand a big fee for the player, who still has four years to run on his current.

Kjaer was considered one of the hottest young prospects in European football in his youth and arguably hasn’t fulfilled his obvious potential though a move to Man United may well be one that helps him to grow.
