With regular right-back Branislav Ivanovic suspended for the first-leg clash with Atleti at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday night, most experts had assumed that the Chelsea manager would simply move makeshift left-back Cesar Azpilicueta back to his more familiar role on the eight-hand side of the Blues’ back four, with Cole coming in on the left-hand side.

However, with the England international having barely featured for the west London club since the turn of the year, it is now understood that the self-styled Special One will instead utilise versatile Brazil international David Luiz as a temporary right back in the Spanish capital, rather than risk playing the 33-year-old.

And as a result, it now seems a certainty that Cole will not be handed a new deal to replace his current 12-month rolling contract at Stamford Bridge this summer.
