Liverpool are preparing a shock move for Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen with Brendan Rodgers hoping to lure the Dane to Anfield having failed to capture the former Ajax man last summer.

CaughtOffside understands Rodgers wants the talented playmaker to offer his side more options in the final third but ultimately sees the 22 year old as a long term replacement for skipper Steven Gerrard.

Eriksen started the current campaign in sedate fashion but in recent months has shown just what he is capable of and Liverpool are ready to make their interest in the youngster known with a £24m bid for a player Tottenham signed for £11m last August.

White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy is unlikely to be spending big when the transfer window re-opens having forked out over £100m on new talents last summer and Liverpool hope that by registering their interest in Eriksen the player will then look to force an exit.

Eriksen may be tempted by the chance of joining a side who can offer Champions League football and having seen the manager who signed him, Andre Villas-Boas, axed there could provide the added motivation to consider a move to table topping Liverpool.

Rodgers is expected to receive significant transfer funds to help strengthen and improve his squad ahead of a long awaited return to Champions League and a move for Eriksen is likely to be just one of a number of high-profile targets on the Liverpool manager’s wish-list.

Christian Eriksen has scored ten goals and provided ten assists in 34 appearances in all competitions this season.
