Liverpool are said to be plotting a move for AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman despite the fact that the Dutch international is currently sidelined with a long term injury according to Football Direct News.

The 24 year old was finding his stride in the Italian top tier before suffering a cruciate ligament injury earlier this month and has already been ruled out of the 2014 World Cup finals but seemingly this has not dampened Brendan Rodgers’ interest in the former PSV Eindhoven man.

Man United had tracked Strootman last summer and are apparently continuing to monitor his progress and could also be in the running to land the rangy midfielder, though one imagines Stadio Olimpico boss Rudi Garcia has no intention of losing a player he only signed last July.

Rodgers doesn’t have a wealth of central midfield options with only the likes of Lucas Leiva, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen to call upon.

Liverpool manager may feel that as well as reinforcing this area of his squad he could see Strootman as a long term replacement for captain Gerrard.
