The 32 year old has had an average season and with just over a year to run on his current deal, and with no new contract on the table, it appears likely Arsene Wenger would seek to offload Arteta for a nominal fee to avoid losing the player on a free transfer in a year’s time.

Arteta has looked off the pace and erratic this term and has been overrun by the opposition on too many occasions and given that Wenger has a host of central midfield options at present, albeit the likes of Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby being out with injury, an Emirates Stadium exit appears on the cards.

Roberto Martinez may struggle to keep hold of loaned in England man Gareth Barry, who has been excellent since moving to Goodison Park on a season long loan spell, as his wage demands could be deemed excessive and as such the Toffees may favour a move to re-sign their former captain.

Arteta spent six and a half years at Everton prior to his move to Arsenal, making 209 appearances for the Merseyside outfit.
