The Netherlands boss, 63, will step down from his current post after this summer’s World Cup and has stressed he wants to manage in the Premier League.

Van Gaal has been strongly linked with Tottenham – and claims he rejected the chance to replace Andre Villas-Boas in December because he did not want to job share – but has been installed as the bookies favourite to permanently succeed David Moyes at United after the Scot was sacked this morning.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich has reportedly been avoiding committing to Spurs because he was holding out for such an eventuality at Old Trafford.

But Dutch newspaper Voetbal International says Arsenal could rival United for the Van Gaal’s signature.

The future of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is currently uncertain and speculation is increasing that the Frenchman will refuse to sign a new contract and walk away from the North London club this summer.

Voetbal point to the appointment of three Dutch coaches at Arsenal as an indication that Van Gaal could be Wenger’s chosen successor.

Frans de Kat and Jan van Loon are both youth coaches with the Gunners, while Andries Jonkers will join the club as head of the academy in the summer.

Jonkers, in particular, is a confidant of Van Gaal and previously worked under the volatile tactician at Bayern.
