The experienced Denmark international was first brought to the Merseyside giants by Benitez back in the 2006 January transfer window, with Agger arriving at Anfield from Bronby for just £6m.

And while the central defender has mainly been a first-team regular for Liverpool for most of the intervening eight-year period, of late Agger has found himself being surplus to requirements at Anfield under new boss Brendan Rodgers, with the Northern Irishman tending to favour using the likes of Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho as his first-choice centre-back partnership.

As a result, it is now expected that Benitez will try to lure Agger to Southern Italy when the summer transfer window does reopen for business, with the 29-year-old currently contracted to Merseyside until June 2016, meaning that it will not be easy for the Spanish trainer to land the defender for next season, that is unless Rodgers is keen to offload the player.
