The deadly Uruguay international only moved to the Parc des Princes from Serie A outfit Napoli at the end of last season in a deal worth a staggering £52.7m, and so making it the sixth most expensive transfer in the history of football.

However, after initially making an eye-catching impact in the French capital, Cavani’s form in front of goal has since waned badly, with the striker proving to be particularly ineffective in last month’s Uefa Champions League quarter-final clashes with Chelsea.

And now as a result, it is understood that United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is set to make contact with the big-spending Parisians within the next two weeks in order to ascertain whether or not they would be willing to offload the 27-year-old when the summer transfer window reopens for business.

From United’s point of view, they wish to lure the South American goal machine to Old Trafford next season for two reasons. Firstly, to inject some much-needed dynamism into their attack and secondly, Woodward is desperate to seal a glamour signing in order to give everyone at the club a much-needed lift.
