Portuguese was overlooked for the role last year.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho could be in line to sensationally take over from recently sacked Manchester United head coach David Moyes in the Old Trafford hot seat next season, according to reports in the Daily Express.

The odds on the self-styled Special One becoming the next Red Devils manager have dramatically fallen from 40/1 to now just 7/1 at many leading bookmakers during the course of the last few days, meaning that the Portuguese is now the third favourite to replace Moyes behind Netherlands national team coach Louis van Gaal and Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti.

And some in the media have even interpreted Mourinho’s claims in the aftermath of Chelsea’s Uefa Champions League semi-final draw with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night that the west London club would be fielding a reserve side against Liverpool this weekend as a means to antagonise club owner Roman Abramovich and so free himself to be able to take the vacant managerial role at the Theatre of Dreams this summer.

Mou was of course considered to be one of the front runners to replace previous United boss Sir Alex Ferguson this time last year, only for the job to be given to Moyes instead.
