The 25 year old defensive midfielder has struggled to retain a foothold in Pep Guardiola’s starting eleven with the former Athletic Bilbao man starting just 11 Bundesliga fixtures this season and as such the Allianz Arena star could be considering his options this summer.

Bayern Munich paid £33m to sign Martinez back in August 2012 and may well demand a similar fee if they are to sell Martinez and Man United could certainly do with adding some steel to the centre of their midfield.

David Moyes opted to use Marouane Fellaini in a holding midfield role but it’s a position the Belgian has struggled to impress in and as such Martinez could well be the right man to provide protection for the club’s defence.

Lack of playing time could well count against Martinez at the 2014 World Cup finals where he is bound to be part of Vicente del Bosque’s squad though not likely to be a prominent member of his starting line-up.

A number of Man United’s current crop of midfielders may well be playing for their futures with the likes of Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher, Shinji Kagawa and Michael Carrick all failing to consistently impress this term.
