The locally born midfielder would become the first player to make the direct switch between the two clubs in 17 years when his Black Cats contract expires this summer.
Colback is already in advanced talks with the Magpies and a move to St James’ Park is now apparently a formality for the former England Under 21 international.
The 24 year old has represented Sunderland since the age of 10 and has amassed 127 appearances for the club but may well feel the time is right to leave the club, who are in danger of suffering relegation to the Championship.
Alan Pardew would do well to bring in Colback to boost his options in the centre of the park.
Colback has been a regular under Gus Poyet making 41 appearances in all competitions this term.
Sunderland v Cardiff City
Cardiff City AWAY WIN (4.33)
“This match is a real relegation decider and it looks likely that Cardiff will have to take at least 5-6 points from their last 3 games in order to stay playing Premier League football. It’s easily forgotten how scrappy this team showed themselves to be at the start of the season when they dominated Man City at home to take a 3-2 victory. Cardiff have had a turbulent season since then but may be showing some hope as their recent 1-0 victory against Southampton & (possibly unlucky) 1-1 draw with Stoke could be indicative of a return to form. Sunderland have been poor at home all season and this may well see the Bluebirds out of the relegation zone, particularly if Norwich and West Brom can’t take any points out of their fixtures. I reckon Cardiff could be value here so, and not just to save themselves from danger but to hot things up at the bottom of the table too and not just the top ”
