Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will be handed a significant transfer war-chest to invest in talents that will further improve a squad that has mounted a genuine Premier League title push, perhaps sooner than anyone would’ve envisaged, with the Anfield side targeting a pair of La Liga talents.

CaughtOffside understands Rodgers will look to make an offer for experienced Argentine international Javier Mascherano as he seeks to clinch a stunning deal to re-sign the Barcelona man.

Rodgers has been encouraged by Mascherano’s representatives to make an offer as he is said to be ready to consider a fresh challenge away from the Nou Camp.

Having sealed a return to the Champions League Rodgers may feel he can persuade the tough tackler to return to the club he represented for three and a half years. Javier Mascherano has struggled to secure a regular spot in the Barcelona midfield and has often been used as a makeshift centre-back by the Catalan side and it’s this adaptability that led to the Liverpool manager considering a move for the 29 year old.

His top level experience could be invaluable and Liverpool are ready to offer up to £16m and Barcelona may well consider such an offer as they set about major changes to their squad.

Liverpool will also look to bring in Real Madrid wing-back Fabio Coentrao to help boost options on the left flank with Brendan Rodgers said to be ready to sell injured Spaniard Jose Enrique.

Coentrao has failed to dislodge Marcelo from Carlo Ancelotti’s starting eleven with the Portuguese international starting just seven La Liga fixtures this term.

The 26 year old came close to joining Man United last summer and appears open to a move to the Premier League and Real Madrid are said to be ready to accept a hefty loss on the £24m they paid Benfica back in July 2011 and Liverpool will offer around £12m when the transfer window re-opens and would look to secure a deal before the 2014 World Cup finals get underway, for fear that a solid display at the tournament could result in other prospective suitors making themselves known.

Rodgers believes his Liverpool side have the pulling power to bring in the duo and looks to bring in the pair as something of an upgrade to his current squad as the Northern Irish boss looks to make the most of an excellent season as he looks to kick-on in 2014/15.
