Last week it was claimed in the British press that the Merseyside giants were hoping to be able to land the in-demand Argentina international when the summer transfer window reopened for business.

However, it now appears, according to reliable Portuguese paper A Bola that the Reds are set to be joined by the north London club in the race to sign Rojo in the close season, with both sides currently desperate to reinforce their back fours for next season.

And in particular, the Gunners are said to be bracing themselves for the departure of club captain and experienced centre-back Thomas Vermaelen from the Emirates, and as such head coach Arsene Wenger is on the look out at present for a versatile defender who would be able to cover both in the centre of defence and on the left-hand side of his back four too.
