The 28-year-old has come under some scrutiny this season as injury and a slight loss of form have seen him fail to reach his usual high standards this term and he has emerged as a shock contender to make an exit from the club this summer.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini is keen to add some more defensive clout to his back line at the end of the season, and after missing out on the likes of Real Madrid’s Pepe and Porto stopper Eliaquim Managala last summer, the Chilean tactician is widely expected to make a return for them both at the end of the season.

Barcelona have some well-documented defensive problems of their own, and the Belgian centre-back has emerged as a target of theirs in the past, so his potential availability this summer looks to have put the Catalan giants on alert.

The Spaniards had previously been keen on signing Chelsea’s David Luiz, but the club are thought to be keen on bringing in two defensive players as Carles Puyol still looks to leave the club at the end of the current campaign.
