The 62 year old wants a deal secured as soon as possible so as to not distract him from his preparations for the 2014 World Cup finals and he is likely to be joined by his own backroom staff though Ryan Giggs will be kept on board as an assistant.

The former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager is a vastly experienced campaigner and seemingly a safe pair of hands to steer the Old Trafford ship after a disastrous spell under axed boss David Moyes.

Man United were said to be considering a move to appoint Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti though a move for the Italian would’ve cost the Glazers a big sum in compensation whereas van Gaal will be a free agent once the summer’s World Cup is complete.

Man United are already pushing ahead with deals to bring in Southampton teenager Luke Shaw, Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos, Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus and FC Porto centre-back Eliaquim Mangala.
