The table topping Vicente Calderon side have been indebted to Costa for his superb goal return but if he were to leave then Diego Simeone knows he’d need to bring in a top quality replacement to fill a rather big void.

Olivier Giroud has come in for a fair bit of criticism in recent months and whilst there is no denying that on occasion the Frenchman can be a little pedestrian and perhaps even one dimensional, the 27 year old has still put in a tremendous amount of work this term and has come up with the good on a regular basis.

No outfield player has started more Premier League fixtures than Giroud and as such he’s looked exhausted at times but his return of 21 goals in all competitions is a very decent one and that’s without much in the way of striking support due to an up and down campaign from Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott out with a long term injury.

Whilst Arsene Wenger should look to sign a striker or two this summer he’d do well to keep hold of Giroud as he is more than capable of being the club’s first choice front-man and could well benefit from real competition for his starting spot.
