Ajax head coach Frank de Boer may bring former Arsenal goalscoring hero Dennis Bergkamp with him to White Hart Lane if the Dutchman does take over from the current Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood at the north London club this summer, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

Speculation on Tuesday night was rife that the ex-Netherlands international was set to replace Sherwood in north London next season, despite the fact that the Englishman was only handed an 18-month contract by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy last December.

However, according to De Boer, the Premier League giants have already made contact with the Eredivisie champions’ director of football Marc Overmars to inquire about the 43-year-old’s availability come the end of the campaign.

“Spurs haven’t had contact with my agent yet. They have approached Ajax, but that’s it,” De Boer confirmed in an interview on Dutch TV on Tuesday night.

“Spurs have let Ajax know they would eventually talk to me when the season’s finished.

“After the last league game (against NEC on Saturday) I’ll think about it.

“I’ll talk to them and listen to what they have to say. I would like to add something to a club like Brendan Rodgers did at Liverpool.

“I see a perspective at Tottenham Hotspur, just as Liverpool and Newcastle United sometimes are, they are sleeping giants.”

And if that eventual scenario does then play out, then there remains the very distinct possibility that De Boer would bring with him his assistant manager from his time spent in charge at the Amsterdam ArenA, a certain one-time Gunners striker.

The two men have enjoyed great success together in the Dutch capital, with Ajax having now won the title in Netherlands three years in a row, although De Boer would surely be mindful of the problems associated with Bergkamp joining Spurs this summer and so may opt to bring his other faithful assistant Hennie Spijkerman with him instead.
