The former Red Devils head coach David Moyes was surprisingly given his marching orders last week by the Premier League champions, despite the Scot having been just 10 months into a six-year deal at Old Trafford.

And following Moyes’s departure from the Theatre of Dreams, Van Gaal has been the favourite to take over from the Glaswegian in the United dugout next season.

In fact, Dutch football journalist Thyce Sleggers thinks that the deal to bring his compatriot to the north west has now all but been concluded, with it just needing to be signed now, before an official announcement will be made at some point next week.

However, it will definitely be made before Wednesday May 7 , which is the date when the Oranje have their first official gathering ahead of this summer’s Fifa World Cup finals in Brazil involving just those players who feature in the Eredivisie.

And according to Sleggers, Van Gaal will want everything to be signed, sealed and delivered before that cut-off date.

“It’s not signed, but I expect it will be done before next Wednesday,” Sleggers said. “It must be done before he starts.

“I know Van Gaal well and I’m sure he won’t want to hear United’s name after his preparations kick-off.”
