The north London club are set to embark on a major overhaul of their first-team squad when the summer transfer window does reopen for business, with central midfield understood to be head coach Arsene Wenger’s number priority of the close season.
And the player that the Frenchman is believed to be targeting is Bender, who the Gunners actually tried to lure to north London in last summer’s transfer window, before Wenger then shifted his focus towards Borussia Dortmund’s defensive midfielder Ilkay Gundogan instead
However, this time Wenger is said to be confident of being able to persuade the 25-year-old to move to the capital as a long-term replacement for the ageing holding midfielder Mikel Arteta, especially given the already strong contingent of German players at the club, including the likes of Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Serge Gnabry.
