The 23-year-old has found holding a regular first team spot down difficult this season as both Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie have been preferred to him up front.
And consequently, the England international has given some serious thought to leaving the club at the end of the current campaign after what has been a disappointing season for both him and the team.
Napoli sporting director Riccardo Bigon has already enquired over whether the England international would be interested in moving to Serie A and remains optimistic he can pull off the deal.
However, Welbeck is thought to be keen to wait and see who the new United manager will be before he makes any major decisions concerning his future.
The Italians aren’t the only club keen on the striker, though, as Tottenham Hotspur are also believed to be keen on acquiring his services as they seek a strike partner for Emmanuel Adebayor.
