The 22-year-old signed for Chelsea in a £3.5m move from Porto in September 2013, but he was immediately sent off to feeder club Vitesse.

Atsu has impressed during his time in Holland, scoring five goals and providing six assists in 25 Eredivisie appearances.

He was recently voted as Vitesse’s player of the season by the club’s fans.

Atsu is prepared to return to Stamford Bridge if required, but he would prefer to have another season of frequent first-team football at Vitesse.

He told Voetbal International: “It all depends on Chelsea. If they say that I have to stay in London, then why not?

“Here, I get the chance to develop myself and at Vitesse we play an attacking system.

“Suppose I move to a bigger club and am placed on the bench or I move to a team that plays counter-attacking football, that would leave me feeling like I am going to the office and taking a nap on my desk.”

Atsu made 17 league appearances for Porto prior to joining Chelsea.

He has been capped 21 times by Ghana at senior international level and could feature at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

No fewer than 26 Chelsea players are currently out on loan away from Stamford Bridge.

Bertrand Traore, Patrick van Aanholt and Lucas Piazon have also spent the season at Vitesse, while Cristian Cuevas and Stipe Perica are in Holland too, with PSV and NAC Breda respectively.

Ulises Davila, Oriol Romeu, Marko Marin and Thibaut Courtois are currently playing in Spain. Gael Kakuta and Wallace are in Italy’s Serie A.

Thorgan Hazard and Billy Clifford are based in Belgium, while Kurt Zouma is in France, having been loaned straight back to Saint-Etienne after agreeing to sign for Chelsea in January.

Goalkeeper Matej Delac is on loan at Sarajevo, while Romelu Lukaku, Victor Moses, Ryan Bertrand, Josh McEachran, Nathaniel Chalobah, Patrick Bamford, Todd Kane, Milan Lalkovic, Sam Hutchinson and George Saville have remained in England and are playing for Everton, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Wigan, Middlesbrough, Derby, Blackburn, Walsall, Sheffield Wednesday and Brentford respectively.
