The experienced Dutch trainer is expected to be announced as the successor to the recently sacked David Moyes in the Theatre of Dreams hot seat by the middle of next week.

And already it is understood that Van Gaal has been busy discussing potential transfer targets for the Premier League champions to go after when the summer transfer window does reopen for business.

Some of those players are said to have been lined up by Moyes while the Scot was still in charge at the Red Devils, such as the likes of Southampton left-back Luke Shaw and Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus.

However, the former Ajax, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager has also put forward his own list of players, with it believed that the name of Dortmund’s Germany international central defender is at the top of Van Gaal’s wish list as a replacement for the club’s departing skipper Nemanja Vidic.
