The Scot was given his marching orders by the Premier League champions last week after it was confirmed that the Red Devils would not be finishing in the top four come the end of the campaign, and so would therefore not be competing in Europe’s premier club competition as well.

As a result, the former Everton boss was relieved of his duties at the Theatre of Dreams, with the Netherlands national team boss immediately installed as the red-hot favourite to take over from Moyes in the United hot seat come the end of the campaign.

In fact, it was even expected that the experienced trainer would already have been confirmed in the role by now, especially given that Van Gaal is due to team up with some members of his Oranje World Cup squad next week for his first training camp ahead of this summer’s tournament.

But it has now emerged that Rooney has asked his bosses at United to reconsider appointing the Dutchman, whose hard-line methods and close working relationship with compatriot Robin van Persie are said to be concerning the England international.
