Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Man United veteran Rio Ferdinand if he is released by the Old Trafford club this summer according to the Sunday People.

The 35 year old is something of an unlikely Arsene Wenger target, the Gunners boss clearly not famed for signing players over the age of 30, though perhaps the Arsenal manager feels the chance to sign a player of Ferdinand’s calibre on a free transfer is too good an opportunity to pass up.

Ferdinand is hoping to be offered a new Man United deal but with just a few short weeks until the end of the season it appears his wish is unlikely to be granted.

As many as a dozen clubs are said to be interested in signing Ferdinand who is into his twelfth season in the Man United first team set-up.

Man United signed Ferdinand from Leeds United in July 2002 and the centre-back has been a reliable performer who has picked up a host of honours including six Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph whilst racking up 444 appearances for the club in the process.

Wenger may well feel the need to bring in further central defensive options this summer, especially if benched Belgian Thomas Vermaelen demands an Emirates Stadium exit.
