Jose Mourinho is readying a summer bid for his former Real Madrid charge Raphael Varane according to Spanish source Marca.

The 20 year old emerged as one of the hottest prospects in European football when Mourinho was in charge at the Bernabeu but under Carlo Ancelotti the French international has barely featured and could therefore be open to a move to Stamford Bridge.

Varane may be seen by Mourinho as a long term replacement for veteran defender John Terry though clearly Chelsea are also yet to see signing Kurt Zouma, who the Blues bought in January and then loaned back to Saint-Etienne until the end of the current campaign.

Brazilian David Luiz has been something of a bit-part player and could be sold whilst Branislav Ivanovic is seen more as a right-back than a central defender.

Varane is likely to feature in Didier Descahamps 2014 World Cup finals squad and as such Mourinho may be wise to get an offer in before the tournament gets underway.

Mourinho is sure to look to bring in a number of new additions as he seeks to strengthen his squad, especially in the final third.
