Manchester United’s chances of signing Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao have been scuppered by one of the Old Trafford club’s favourite sons, according to the Sunday People.

The Red Devils failed in an attempt to land Coentrao on Transfer Deadline Day in September, but the Premier League side remain keen on the attack-minded 26-year-old.

United have not yet offered a new contract to Patrice Evra, whose current deal is due to expire at the end of June.

With 32-year-old Evra likely to depart, it is widely expected to United will try again to bring Coentrao to England.

Real president Florentino Perez was apparently willing to do a deal with United, but, according to The People, manager Carlo Ancelotti and goal machine Cristiano Ronaldo have urged the former politician to keep hold of the 44-time Portugal international.

Coentrao is Real’s second choice left-back, behind Marcelo. However, he is an excellent deputy to the Brazilian, which he proved earlier this week by producing a highly competent 90-minute display during Real’s 4-0 win at Bayern Munich in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg.

Despite leaving Old Trafford almost five years ago in an £80m move, Ronaldo remains an incredibly popular figure among United fans, who continue to sing his name.

The two-time World Player of the Year scored 84 goals in 196 Premier League appearances for United.

So far for Real, has has notched 163 times in 147 La Liga outings.
