Reds boss Brendan Rodgers had identified the Valencia star as the ideal man to bolster his engine room earlier on in the campaign, and even sent the club’s chief scout, Barry Hunter, to check up on him.

The 25-year-old has had an excellent campaign for Valencia and has made key contributions in some of the club’s biggest fixtures – he scored in the 3-2 win at Barcelona in February and netted in the 2-2 draw at Real Madrid last weekend.

However, Liverpool’s path to his signature may not be as clear as first thought as Atletico boss Diego Simeone looks to make a move again after missing out on him last summer.

Valencia are keen to hold on to him, though, having marked him as an indispensable first team player and any side looking to sign him will have to meet his £20.5m release clause fee.

Parejo, who had a brief spell on loan at QPR in 2008, has scored five goals in 44 outings in all competitions this season.
