Perhaps unsurprisingly two of the three players targeted are defensive additions as Rodgers seeks to shore up a back-line that has conceded far too many this term.

The Northern Irish boss wants to bring in Cardiff City captain Steven Caulker to steady the ship at the back and Rodgers knows the England international well from their shared time at Swansea City and could be assisted in advances for the centre-back due to the fact that the 22 year old has a relegation release clause that can now be triggered following the Bluebirds failure to retain their top tier status.

Rodgers also wants to bring in Southampton teenager Luke Shaw, who could perhaps act as a replacement for injured Spaniard Jose Enrique.

John Flanagan has done a wonderful job in a makeshift role replacing Enrique but may well be switched across to the right in the long term.

Liverpool also want to bring in Saints midfielder Adam Lallana, who’s form this term has led to a spot in the PFA Premier League team of the season and international recognition that could lead to a spot in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the 2014 World Cup finals.

Lallana could be seen as a long term replacement for veteran skipper Steven Gerrard.
