Chelsea have been linked with something of a surprise move for Tottenham centre-back Vlad Chiriches who is seen by the Blues as a potential long term replacement for captain John Terry according to Football Direct News.

33 year old Stamford Bridge skipper Terry is out of contract in the summer and as yet no new deal has been forthcoming and though Jose Mourinho already moved to bring in Kurt Zouma from Saint-Etienne in January the Chelsea manager apparently now wants to add Romanian international Chiriches to his squad.

Though Chiriches looked assured in his early outings at White Hart Lane the jury is still very much out on the former Steaua Bucharest man.

The 24 year old would no doubt jump at the chance of a move to join Chelsea, not least as the west London side can offer him the Champions League football that Tim Sherwood and his predecessor Andre Villas-Boas failed to secure but would also no doubt secure a big pay-rise.

Any successful move for Chiriches could well depend on what the future holds for Tottenham’s other central defensive options.

Jan Vertonghen has been strongly linked with a summer exit, Younes Kaboul is out of contract at the end of this campaign and Micheal Dawson has blown hot and cold all season.
