Tottenham are to step up their interest in Sunderland winger Adam Johnson according to Football Direct News.

Though the Black Cats have managed to avoid the drop after collecting a string of excellent victories of late it’s entirely plausible that the 26 year old would feel he deserves to represent a side in the upper reaches of the Premier League and as such a move to White Hart Lane may tempt the former Man City man.

Johnson is Sunderland’s top scorer and could well be in the running for a late call-up to the 2014 World Cup squad and clearly a push for a role in the England national team set-up would be aided by a move to a side in the top six over being stranded near the bottom of the table.

The likes of Nacer Chadli and Aaron Lennon have failed to make an impact this term and chairman Daniel Levy is right to look at alternative wide-attacking options though an official move for Johnson may have to wait until the north London club make up their mind about who will manage them in the long term.

Speculation is rife that Tim Sherwood will be axed and therefore whomever replaces him as Tottenham boss will clearly have to give the thumbs up to a bid for Johnson who would surely cost the club in excess of the £10m Sunderland paid for the player back in August 2012.
