The midfielder lost his footing at a crucial moment in the Merseysiders’ crucial league showdown with title rivals Chelsea at Anfield last month to allow Senegal international front man Demba Ba a clear run through on goal to put the visitors ahead in a match that the west London club went on to win 2-0.

And it was that defeat that has effectively cost Liverpool the chance of winning their first top-flight title since 1990, with ,Manchester City now two points ahead of Gerrard and Co as we go into the final contest of the campaign this weekend, with the Blues now needing just a point against West Ham United at Eastlands to be confirmed as champions.

However, Gerrard has still been able to see the lighter side of the incident, saying: ‘The biggest message when you sign for this club is you never get too high when you win an award or trophy and you never get too down when one slips away – literally slips away.

“You continue to fight game by game but for me I stand here really proud of my team-mates and have a huge belief that if this group of players stick together and we can make the right additions in the summer the future is bright for the club.”
