Serie A giants Inter Milan are hoping to be able to take advantage of the current uncertainty surrounding the future of holding midfielder Jon Obi Mikel at Stamford Bridge by luring the player to San Siro for next season, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The experienced Nigeria international was thought to have a key role to play at the west London club this season under returning Blues head coach Jose Mourinho.

However, following the £21m capture of Benfica’s defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic in the January transfer window to operate in the same role in front of the Chelsea back four, Mikel’s chances in the first team at Stamford Bridge in the second half of the campaign have become fewer and fewer.

And now it is understood that Inter are set to make a move for Mikel when the summer transfer window reopens for business, despite the fact that the 27-year-old is contracted to Chelsea until June 2017.

However, if the Italian top-flight outfit are unable to lure Mikel to San Siro for the next campaign, then it is believed that they will move for either Manchester City’s Javi Garcia or Tottenham Hotspur’s Sandro instead.
