The Red Devils parted company with former boss David Moyes late last month following a string of disappointing results had left the top-flight giants languishing down in an unfamiliar seventh place in the table and with no chance whatsoever of being able to qualify for next season’s Uefa Champions League by finishing in the top four of the Premier League.

And now after weeks of face-to-face talks between the experienced Netherlands national team coach and United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, the club are expected to officially announce Van Gaal as Moyes’s successor following the club’s final game of the campaign against Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday.

However, in a new twist to proceedings, it is understood that Woodward has pressured the Dutchman into making Giggs his right-hand man at Old Trafford next season rather than his original choice of Patrick Kluivert.
