The Northern Irishman has guided the Reds to shock challenge for the Premier League title this season, with Liverpool going into their final fixture of the league campaign against Newcastle United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon still in with a chance of a first championship win since 1990.

And although the odds are still very much stacked against Liverpool finishing the season with silverware – first-placed Manchester City need just a point more at home to midtable West Ham United to be sure of the title – Rodgers now seems set to put pen to paper on a new deal at Anfield when the campaign draws to a close.

The 42-year-old and his advisers have been locked together in talks for some weeks now about extending Rodgers’s current deal, which runs out in June 2015, by four more years, with the highly rated young trainer now confirming that he will soon sign the contract.

“I’ve obviously been in discussions with the club and there’s the framework of a deal in place,” said Rodgers.

“But I’ve always said it will be the end of the season. I want nothing to detract from what has been a great season for ourselves.”
