Liverpool are reportedly keen to land Barcelona midfielder Alex Song with the Cameroon international set to be offloaded by the La Liga side according to the Daily Mirror.

The 26 year old has, perhaps unsurprisingly, failed to garner a regular spot in the Barcelona starting eleven over the past couple of seasons with Sergio Busquets continuing to get the nod as the club’s first choice defensive midfielder and a move back to the Premier League may tempt the tough tackler.

Barcelona paid Arsenal £16m two years ago but will accept £8m for his services and that’s a fee Liverpool would do well to fork out.

Song has stated publicly that he intends to return to the English top tier,

“If I leave Barcelona it will be to return to the Premier League.

“I will return to England one day, that’s for sure.”

Brendan Rodgers could well do with some added steel in the centre of the park given that the only player who offers such a service in his current squad is Lucas Leiva, with the Brazilian struggling with knee injuries over the past few seasons.
