The England international has just enjoyed a fine campaign at the heart of the struggling Bluebirds back four, despite the South Wales strugglers eventual relegation from the Premier League last weekend.

However, it is that demotion to the Championship which now looks set to allow the Merseyside giants to lure Caulker to Anfield, 12 months after Reds head coach Brendan Rodgers first tried to lure the central defender to the club.

On that occasion, though, Liverpool were unable to persuade Caulker’s then employers Tottenham Hotspur to sell them the player, with the north London refusing to allow the 22-year-old to join one of their main rivals, meaning that the youngster was instead offloaded to newly promoted Cardiff for a fee of just £8m, even though Rodgers and Co were prepared to pay a far higher amount.

But Liverpool now look set to finally get their man by taking advantage of the relegation clause in Caulker’s Cardiff deal that allows the defender to quit the club this summer if the club drops down to the Championship, with Spurs set to earn 50 per cent of the sell-on fee.
