Suarez picked up the top awards from the Professional Footballers’ Association and Football Writers’ Association after producing a stunning campaign, which will end with today’s home game against Newcastle United.

After missing Liverpool’s opening five league matches due to his suspension for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, the Uruguayan has scored 31 goals and provided 12 assists in 32 top-flight appearances.

Although Suarez is the league’s top goalscorer by a considerable margin, Mourinho thinks that Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko would have been a more worthy winner of the PFA award.

When asked whether he would have voted for Suarez, Mourinho told The Telegraph: “He bites, not this season, the previous season.

“This is a different season, so I’m not speaking about one mistake that a man can have, and you will have to be punished for the rest of your life if you make a mistake on the football pitch, so that’s not the point for me.

“My player of the year would be always from the champion, always, in every condition, always a player from the champion, representative of the champion, so if the champion is Man City – they need a point, no? – I would say a City player and if I have to choose one, I think I would choose Dzeko.”

He added: “He’s not just a goalscorer. He assists, he plays, he behaves, he’s fair, he doesn’t dive, doesn’t try to put opponents on the stands with accumulation of cards. I would choose Dzeko.”

Dzeko has only provided one assist in 30 Premier League appearances this season, but he has scored 16 goals.

City will be crowned champions of England for the second time in three years today as long as they avoid defeat at home to West Ham United this afternoon.

If the Hammers win at the Etihad Stadium then Liverpool can secure their first league title since 1990 by beating Newcastle at Anfield.

The Telegraph claim that Mourinho could be interested in making a move for Dzeko this summer as he looks to bolster his side’s attacking options.
