Liverpool are reportedly leading the race to sign Portuguese international William Carvalho with a £30m bid for the youngster on the cards according to the Daily Star.

The 22 year old enforcer has been strongly linked with a move to Man United for some months but now a move to Anfield seems a possibility with Brendan Rodgers keen to bring in some much needed steel to his midfield.

The Sporting Lisbon battler has been scouted by Rodgers this term and the Northern Irishman appears to see the acquisition of a strong tackling defensive midfielder could help to resolve his leaky defence.

David Moyes had been looking to bring in Carvalho but incoming replacement Louis van Gaal is not so keen, leaving the door open to a Liverpool bid.

Currently Liverpool’s only real out and out defensive midfield option comes in the form of Brazilian Lucas Leiva though the long serving player has more than his fair share of injury concerns of late, an issue that has restricted the 27 year old to 20 Premier League starts this term.

Carvalho’s Primeira Liga employers are keen to get as much as they can for their prized asset but one wonders if £30m is a fair price to pay for a player of relatively little top level experience. Is that a price Rodgers would be willing to pay?
