Ferdinand was told this week that he would not be offered a new deal to stay at the club and would be free to leave in June when his current deal expires.

The 25-year-old had been hoping to pen a fresh extension to keep him at Old Trafford, but it has appeared as though he just the first name to be jettisoned by the Red Devils ahead of a massive summer rebuilding project.

However, United are already zeroing in on a replacement already in the shape of Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels.

The German international has been a long time target for the club, and though they are not able to offer him Champions League football, they are hoping that he will be interested in the prospect of being a key member of their rebirth as a force in English football once again.

United’s chances of landing the ball-playing centre-half have also been made easier by Barcelona’s pursuit of Chelsea maestro David Luiz, and chief executive Ed Woodward is confident Hummels will be lining up alongside one of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling or Jonny Evans in August.
