Tottenham are lining up a summer bid for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez according to Italian source TuttoMercato.

Having forked out over £50m to bring in Erik Lamela and Roberto Soldado from AS Roma and Valencia respectively it’s likely White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy will look to sell before he buys but a move for England man Rodriguez is a wise one to consider.

The former Burnley man has been pivotal in Southampton’s fine campaign though a knee injury last month has unfortunately ruled him out of the upcoming World Cup finals.

With Tim Sherwood having been axed one imagines any move for new additions will have to wait until a permanent replacement has been found and this could well work in Rodriguez’s favour as Tottenham will want to make sure the powerful forward has made a full recovery before making an offer for his services.

Rodriguez may feel he has achieved all he can at St Mary’s and his return of 15 goals in 30 Premier League starts this term has proven what he is capable of.

Spurs would do well to keep hold of Emmanuel Adebayor and youngster Harry Kane, both of whom have impressed since the turn of the year, whilst the aforementioned flops Lamela and Soldado should be offloaded even if the club can recoup only a portion of the money they paid for the duo.
