Football Direct News is ready to start talks with the Primeira Liga club after efforts to land AS Roma battler Mehdi Benatia failed to lead to a positive conclusion.

Sporting Lisbon will demand a whopping £35m for 22 year old Portuguese international Carvalho, which is a massive fee for a player of relatively little top level experience and may be a price-tag the Blues demand is lowered before they take their interest any further.

Carvalho is only into his first full season at Sporting and though he has impressed greatly, forcing his way into the Paulo Bento’s national team set-up for the upcoming World Cup finals, Chelsea are not in the business of mindlessly spending money just for the sake of it.

Mourinho displayed the west London club’s more considered approach to squad building in January when he more than covered the cost of signing Nemanja Matic, Mohamed Salah and Kurt Zouma by cashing-in on the sales of Juan Mata, Kevin de Bruyne and Michael Essien to Man United, Wolfsburg and AC Milan respectively.
