The then Premier League champions were embarrassed by the Merseysiders at the Theatre of Dreams back in March in what was one of the lowest points of the club’s season.

And when the team then sat down to dissect their 3-0 hammering on the following Monday with their then head coach David Moyes, a fight broke out between club captain Vidic and his vice-captain Evra after the Serbia international accused his left back of giving him enough cover at the back during the match, with the centre back shown a red card after bringing down Reds front man Daniel Sturridge for a second-half spot kick.

“We argued amongst ourselves,” revealed Vidic.

“This year more than any other, because when you have bad times, people show they care. We are still friends, but we were arguing to get better. We wanted to improve.

“We could say those things to each other because we have been together for so long, but it hurt. If you didn’t argue, it would not be right. We had some hard moments in the dressing-room between ourselves.”
