CaughtOffside Awards: Tottenham And Chelsea Stars Amongst Best Signings Of Premier League Season

Posted by

Some huge money was spent in the transfer market by Premier League clubs this season. Find out who CaughtOffside writers voted for as best signing here.

Adam Davies:
James McCarthy. While questions were asked of Roberto Martinez for paying £14 million for his old player at Wigan Athletic, the Republic of Ireland international has answered them emphatically. An extremely hard worker, McCarthy is a tenacious player who screens the Toffees’ defence brilliantly and distributes the ball exceptionally well.

The 23 year-old is well on his way to becoming a superb all round midfielder.

Tom Seymour:
Christian Eriksen. Much has been made of Tottenham Hotspur’s terrible summer of spending in 2013 and whilst that is largely justified, they did make one brilliant signing.

The £11.5m acquisition of Christian Eriksen was not only a bargain for a 21-year-old (now 22) attacking midfielder with bags of Champions League and international experience, but could also shape their team for years to come. The Dane has taken to English football superbly and Spurs should build their side around him.

Richard Morgan:
Nemanja Matic. He may have cost £24m for the Blues in the January transfer window, but in his short time at Stamford Bridge the Serbia international has proved himself to be the best holding midfielder in the entire Premier League – if not on the continent too.

Robert Summerscales:
Christian Eriksen. Tottenham Hotspur shelled out over £100m last summer. While the majority of that money seems to have been invested poorly, the £11.5m paid to Ajax for Eriksen was unquestionably a great deal for Spurs.

The Danish international has scored 10 goals and provided 10 assists in 34 Premier League and Europa League appearances for the White Hart Lane club.

He has become the team’s playmaker and is doing an impressive job of imitating Gareth Bale, who left a huge hole when he left North London to join Real Madrid in September.

WINNER: Christian Eriksen (Tottenham Hotspur)
