Liverpool are said to be weighing up a shock move for out of favour Manchester City defender Gael Clichy this summer as they continue to look for a suitable candidate to fill their problem left-back slot, according to Football Direct News.

The Reds are likely to be in the market for new signings in that position in the coming months as they prepare to bid farewell to loan signing Aly Cissokho, who does not appear to have earned himself a permanent move to Anfield from Valencia.

Liverpool had to rely on youngster Jon Flanagan filling in on the opposite side of the defence, and though he impressed in the left-back slot manager Brendan Rodgers is said to be looking for someone with more experience and who specialises in the role to take over from him next term.

Clichy made his breakthrough with Arsenal, but made a surprise move to City in 2011, and after a positive start to his career at the Etihad he has fallen out of favour this season.

The champions will no doubt be keen to avoid selling an important player to a rival club, though Clichy himself may be keen to move as he has largely been behind Aleksandar Kolarov in the pecking order this season.
