Reds boss Brendan Rodgers revealed his desire to add ‘multi-functional’ players to his squad this summer as he attempts to go one better next season and win the Premier League having been pipped to the title on the final day by Manchester City.

Rodgers is already hoping to secure a deal to sign Southampton star Adam Lallana in the coming weeks, but he is now also interested in bringing the German Under-21 international to the club too.

Reports in Germany have claimed that the Reds have approached the Bundesliga side with an enquiry into Can’s availability, though the club themselves have yet to confirm the story.

The 20-year-old, who can operate anywhere down the left side, has enjoyed a fine season in which he helped Leverkusen claim Champions League football for themselves next season.

However, Liverpool’s interest in the player may come to an end depending on what Bayern Munich decide to do. Bayern permitted Can to join Leverkusen last summer, but as part of that deal a buy-back clause was inserted.
