Blues boss Jose Mourinho is hoping to sign the 19 year old in a £12m deal as he seeks to strengthen his defence, perhaps seeing Stones as a long term replacement for veteran skipper John Terry.

With a number of sides chasing the former Barnsley man Mourinho wants a deal agreed before the World Cup as there is every chance that the Toffees star could be promoted from the stand-by list to replace injured Man United man Phil Jones in Roy Hodgson’s squad.

Everton paid £3m for Stones and under Roberto Martinez the teenage centre-back has shown great potential and more than proved himself capable of cutting it at the highest level.

The Goodison Park side collected six clean sheets in the 15 top tier fixtures Stones started and the Everton man is rightly considered one of the hottest prospects in English football.

Though Mourinho signed young French defender Kurt Zouma in January, and then loaning him back to Saint-Etienne for the rest of the campaign, there is every chance that David Luiz will leave the west London club this summer and as such there is certainly scope for further defensive captures.
