Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole will leave Stamford Bridge this summer on the expiration of his contract.

The legendary Englishman, who has won over 100 caps his country, reported the news to his Twitter followers late last night.

For the first time in his career, Cole struggled to get into the first-team this season just gone, with impressive Spaniard Cesar Azpilicueta being continually favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Despite some solid defensive outings from Cole towards the end of the season against Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, it wasn’t enough to earn the 33-year-old a new contract, or a place in Roy Hodgson’s England Squad.

Instead, the England boss selected Southampton wonderkid Luke Shaw, who many believe is the natural heir to Cole’s England left-back throne. Upon hearing the news, Cole retired from international duty, and it seems his Chelsea career has also come to an end.

Now, after winning one Premier League, four FA Cups, a League Cup and the Champions League with the Blues, it seems as though he could be joining their rivals Liverpool, who are poised to offer him a deal to solve their problem left-back position.

Here’s what Cole told his Twitter followers last night:
